About Us

It Started With
A Commitment

Thank you for your interest in Fire Shield Fire Protection, Inc. Fire Shield is the vision of Nelson Ligon who began operation in 1985 in a relatively small office in Dallas, Texas.

Nelson previously worked in the fire protection industry for Lewis Fire Equipment starting off as a technician and leaving as their service manager before forming Fire Shield.

Moving from employee to employer was a bit unorthodox for Nelson. Nelson recalls, “I had been with Lewis Fire Equipment for five year, I had a good position in the company, but I knew there was something more. I needed to make a firm commitment to serve the Lord. Through my time in prayer, I felt lead to start my own fire protection business and name it Fire Shield.”

Whatever you do, do your work heartily,
as for the Lord rather than for men

Colossians 3:23

The Early Years

With little to invest in Fire Shield getting started, Nelson was fortunate to have a friend who was willing to allow Nelson to build off of his fire equipment business. “It was 1984 and I was using the Brinson Fire & Safety name, invoices, and bank account to get my own business off the ground. It took about a year to make the switch, but in 1985 Fire Shield was now a reality.”

Up and running, and yet Nelson still had much to learn about being a business owner. “When I first got started, I let money and fear rule my decisions.” While the new business was liberating, Nelson found the first year extremely difficult to providing for his wife, seven year old daughter, and twin four year old boys. “I found myself far too often justifying decisions that were not based upon integrity in order to survive.”

A Decision
to Live by God’s Word

Nelson’s growth through this period is owed to his revived faith in Jesus Christ. “When I looked at myself and the business, I realized I was going to have to make a decision to live by God’s word… regardless of the outcome.”

Psalm 90:17

Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us; And confirm for us the work of our hands; Yes, confirm the work of our hands.

John 6:28

"Do not work for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you, for on Him the Father, God, has set His seal.”

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your works to the Lord And your plans will be established.

Ephesians 4:28

He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need

Putting his faith into action Nelson began to see Fire Shield grow and life became stable. Nelson explains, “It’s not just about talking about God, it’s about living for him. Without Godly principles you will never make it in the long run.”

Nelson Ligon circa 1988
“...I urge you to put your life into God’s hands by committing your life to Jesus Christ. Put Him at the center of your life, for only then will you find lasting joy and peace and satisfaction.”
Billy Graham

Questions And Answers

In order to certify or recharge a fire extinguisher there are a few items we consider in determining if it is serviceable:

  • Year the fire extinguisher was manufactured
There are several extinguishers that cannot be serviced due to the date they were manufactured. Additionally, the age of the extinguisher may require need for testing before it can be certified.
  • Use of plastic in the fire extinguisher design
As a company, we do not recharge extinguishers with plastic heads as many are notorious for leaking. If it just needs to be certified and testing is not due we will be happy to certify the extinguisher.
  • State of the fire extinguisher
Bumps, dents, and scratches can limit our ability to service an extinguisher. Damages to the cylinder and/or missing sections on the label can require an extinguisher be pulled from service.

With multiple items to examine, contact Fire Shield Fire Protection, Inc. to help you determine what the best course of action is.

When it comes to certifying a fire extinguisher the term inspection is commonly used. However, in order for a fire extinguisher to receive a certified tag an annual maintenance must be completed.

While both are an option, if you have a few fire extinguishers and want to bring them to our shop you will save money – we just ask that you call first to make sure we haven’t run out for lunch or to the bank.

Fire Shield Fire Protection, Inc. is located just NE of Texas Motor Speedway inside of the Northwest Regional Airport.

From I-35W, take exit 74  to head East on Cross Timbers Rd/Farm to Market 1171. Turn right onto Cleveland Gibbs Rd and follow it down to the stop sign. Continue on Cleveland Gibbs Rd passing Airway Blvd. Our shop will be in the middle section of buildings between Airway and Cockleburr Rd (we’re not actually on Cockleburr, if you get to Cockleburr Rd you just passed us).

Most extinguishers you can view the gauge to tell if it needs to be recharged. However, if an extinguisher has been used even a little bit and the gauge still shows the fire extinguisher charged it will need a recharge asap.

Kitchen fire suppression system service schedules differ from fire extinguishers in that they are serviced semiannually.

As a result, one of those 6 month intervals we will service the kitchen system and your extinguishers while the other will be for the kitchen system only.
