Some Common Questions

Have questions you want answers to?

In order to certify or recharge a fire extinguisher there are a few items we consider in determining if it is serviceable:

  • Year the fire extinguisher was manufactured
There are several extinguishers that cannot be serviced due to the date they were manufactured. Additionally, the age of the extinguisher may require need for testing before it can be certified.
  • Use of plastic in the fire extinguisher design
As a company, we do not recharge extinguishers with plastic heads as many are notorious for leaking. If it just needs to be certified and testing is not due we will be happy to certify the extinguisher.
  • State of the fire extinguisher
Bumps, dents, and scratches can limit our ability to service an extinguisher. Damages to the cylinder and/or missing sections on the label can require an extinguisher be pulled from service.

With multiple items to examine, contact Fire Shield Fire Protection, Inc. to help you determine what the best course of action is.

When it comes to certifying a fire extinguisher the term inspection is commonly used. However, in order for a fire extinguisher to receive a certified tag an annual maintenance must be completed.

Most fire extinguishers have a gauge that indicates if they need to be recharged. However, even if the gauge shows it’s still charged, if the extinguisher has been used—even just a little—it needs to be recharged immediately to ensure it’s fully operational for future use.

Kitchen fire suppression system service schedules differ from fire extinguishers in that they are serviced semiannually.

As a result, one of those 6 month intervals we will service the kitchen system and your extinguishers while the other will be for the kitchen system only.

While both are an option, if you have a few fire extinguishers and want to bring them to our shop you will save money – we just ask that you call first to make sure we haven’t run out for lunch or to the bank.
